Canoe Place Chapel - This small blue and white building located on Canoe Place Road in Hampton Bays has moved several times over the years but has found a new home. It once served as a church and a meeting house for the Shinnecock Nation and was known as the “Indian Meetinghouse”. Local historians have concluded that the building was once part of a Congregational Church where the Rev. Paul Cuffee preached to the Shinnecocks. We hope you will take notice now, as the Town works to restore this graceful building to its natural beauty. Work should be completed in the summer of 2016.
2006 - Town purchased land with Community Preservation Funds
2015 - Building moved to its current location on Canoe Place Road
2015 - Interior and exterior renovation began
2016 - Restoration is ongoing.
2017 - The CPI Chapel is now in the final stages of completion. Restoration is expected to be completed by the third week in April.
