The Southampton Town Board welcomed its new Town Attorney, James M. Burke, at its semi-monthly Town Board Meeting on Tuesday March 8, 2016.
Mr. Burke of Port Jefferson was sworn in as Town Attorney, by Southampton Town Clerk Sundy Schermeyer.
Supervisor Jay Schneiderman said, “Jim comes to us with an extensive legal background having worked for the New York State Attorney General’s Long Island Office and we look forward to a good working relationship.”
Since 2011, Mr. Burke worked for New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman as the head attorney for the Real Property Bureau on Long Island and New York City. He specializes in land use, zoning, environmental law and real estate appraisal.
From 2009-2011, Mr. Burke was Senior Counsel at Lewis and Johs, LLP in Melville where he served as lead attorney in a firm of over sixty attorneys. .
He twice served as a Deputy Town Attorney for the Town of Brookhaven from 1992 to 1996 and again 2006-2009. .
Mr. Burke will now oversee a staff of five Assistant Town Attorneys. Kathleen Murray who had been serving as acting Town Attorney will resume her position as Deputy Town Attorney. .
Mr. Schneiderman noted “Kathleen has done a wonderful job serving as acting Town Attorney while we conducted a search for the lead position. I want to thank her for her tremendous guidance during the transition period.” .
Mr. Burke took his seat at the dais with the Town Board immediately after being sworn
