RELIEF FOR PROPERTY OWNERS REQUESTED WITH PROPERTY TAX EXTENSION DUE TO COVID 19 PANDEMIC

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone has submitted a request to Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to issue an executive order that will allow an extension on the second half of property taxes that would have been due by the end of this month.  The order gives a 45 day extension to July 15th to homeowners impacted by the Coronavirus who lost 25 percent of their income or a commercial business owner with a net profit of $1 million or less who saw a 50 percent loss in revenue.

Those applying for the extension would have to file an attestation form that can be acquired by calling 3-1-1.  County Executive Bellone had put together a working group of elected officials and business leaders, including Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman to come up with a workable plan to send to the Governor for approval.

“Nobody loves paying property taxes,” said Supervisor Schneiderman. “But that’s how we fund critical services needed during the pandemic like public health workers, police officers and ambulance costs. The coronavirus has put a strain on everyone, some have lost their jobs and some have lost loved ones. Allowing people who need the help an additional 45 days to pay their property taxes without interest or penalties will provide a little relief at this difficult time."

“On behalf of the many taxpayers that we have heard from during the past two months seeking relief for their property tax payments,” said Tax Receiver Theresa Kiernan.  “I would like to thank everyone who participated in the committee to arrive at this decision to offer an extension to July 15th.  Regarding property owners planning to pay “on time”, besides normal business hours of 8:30am to 4:00pm, my office will have additional hours on Saturday May 30 from 9:00am to 12:00pm, and on Monday June 1 from 8:30am to 6:00pm.  Please visit the town website at www.southamptontownny.gov for additional information.”
