Applications for the Town of Southampton Youth Bureau’s 2017 Community Service Challenge are now available! The Southampton Youth Bureau, through the Youth Advisory Committee, will be offering community service grants to youth groups in the Town of Southampton. A total of $2,500 in grant money will be awarded to selected service projects by April 15, 2017. If selected, the project must be completed by November 30th, 2017. Each community service project must have a positive impact that benefits the surrounding community. Eligible applicants can be sponsored youth organizations such as Scouts or 4H, school clubs, faith-based youth groups, community service organizations, and other youth groups with an adult sponsor. Youth groups of all ages are encouraged to apply. All applications for the Community Service Challenge must be submitted by Tuesday, March 28th, 2017. The Southampton Youth Bureau offers students the opportunity to receive help with their studies every Tuesday from 4:00pm - 6:00pm at the Flanders Community Center, 655 Flanders Road. The Southampton Youth Bureau is currently taking registrations for Hamptons Chess Club. Chess teaches youth how to manage skills, control impulses, delay gratification, and reduce stress. Learning chess can help build self confidence, gain a sense of community, and learn fair play. Students will participate in fun & interactive chess practices, weekly chess puzzles, and compete in chess tournaments. Classes will be held on Tuesdays from 6:00pm - 7:00pm at the Flanders Community Center, 655 Flanders Road starting October 25th, 2016. Although the program is free, pre-registration is required. If you are in grades 7th through 12th and interested in planning trips and events, doing community service projects, and making friends with students from other schools, then sign up for YAC! The Southampton Youth Bureau is looking for new members to join its Youth Advisory Committee, (YAC). As a YAC member, you can help make a difference in your community. Community service projects may include leaf raking for senior citizens, hosting a blood drive, meeting with elected officials in Albany for youth causes, participating in a sticker shock alcohol awareness campaign, or other activities that can make a difference in our community. Youth Advisory Committee is a great way to get involved and to earn community service credit hours during the school year. Meetings are held the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month at the Hampton Bays Community Center, 25 Ponquogue Avenue, from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm.
