Town of Southampton Recognizes National Volunteer Week April 17 – 23, 2022

Town of Southampton, NY April 21, 2022 —This week is National Volunteer Week nationwide. National Volunteer Week was initiated in 1974 by President Nixon as a way to recognize and celebrate the efforts and achievements of volunteers in our communities. The other goal of National Volunteer Week is to encourage volunteering and develop a culture of service within the community. National Volunteer Week has been consistently promoted and celebrated every year since 1974.

“The Town of Southampton is home to many dedicated and wonderful volunteer groups,” said Supervisor Jay Schneiderman. “From our garden clubs, to our volunteer advisory board members, community service organizations, and the dedicated men and women of the Fire and Emergency Medical Services in the Town of Southampton, we are lucky to have a long history of amazing volunteers,” said Supervisor Schneiderman. The Town of Southampton utilizes and benefits from many volunteers who serve on Community Advisory Committees and various Advisory Boards that support important Town functions. Town residents are also protected on a daily basis by the dedicated members who serve in the eleven volunteer fire departments and six volunteer ambulance corps. throughout the Town. Councilman Tommy John Schiavoni said, “The men and women of our emergency services community routinely take time away from their own families to answer calls for help from their neighbors. The service that these members provide is second to none and is a huge benefit to our community. We are very proud of our volunteer firefighters and EMS providers.”

Town Board members Bouvier, Martel and McNamara, who have also all volunteered in the community in different capacities echoed the same sentiments. Each of them, having volunteered with community service organizations like the Rotary Club, or on advisory boards, the PTA, or with other community groups, stressed the importance of volunteers in our communities and the immense satisfaction that volunteering can bring to individuals. Councilman Martel said, “Whether it’s volunteering for the Great East End Cleanup this coming weekend, helping out at a Habitat for Humanity wall raising, or helping a neighbor who is experiencing a fire or medical emergency, the sense of fulfillment and pride that comes from helping those in need or contributing to the betterment of your community is very gratifying.” The Town Board members all extend thanks to all the wonderful volunteers in our community and encourage residents to consider volunteering and getting involved to become part of our amazing Town tradition of volunteerism.
