Climate Action Plan - Community Engagement Survey

2022-Survey---Michael

DATE: August 22, 2022

The Town of Southampton is developing a Climate Action Plan focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions generated throughout the community from electricity, heating and cooling buildings, transportation, and waste disposal. Below is a breakdown of the key community-wide sources of greenhouse gas emissions in Southampton.

The Plan will prioritize actions that support environmental and community objectives, and improve quality of life for Southampton residents.

We need your input!

This survey will help identify key climate change priorities from Town residents to inform the development of the Plan. We appreciate your time and input.

Our first step in developing a Climate Action Plan and Energy Blueprint was to understand how energy is used across the Town, and what are the key sources of carbon emissions. This figure shows a breakdown of the Town of Southampton’s community-wide emissions. Almost half (49%) of emissions come from heating, cooling, and powering homes across the Town. An additional 20% of emissions are from commercial buildings. After buildings, transportation is the second biggest producer of emissions, with 23% of emissions from on-road vehicles, 3% from rail, and ~1% from marine transportation. Finally, 4% of emissions are generated from waste and wastewater.
