The Town of Southampton will kick off 2023 with a $5 million head start, thanks to a grant awarded from last week’s federal omnibus spending bill.
Requested by New York’s senior Senator in Washington, Chuck Schumer, the funds have been earmarked for a sewer system to anchor the Riverside Action Plan, which the Town Board incorporated into the zoning code in 2015. A wastewater treatment facility would effectuate the plan’s high-density and mixed-use development throughout the Flanders-Riverside business corridor along State Route 24/Flanders Road.
Lining up as much infrastructure money as possible in order to minimize debt has been a top priority for town officials. The new federal grant will be an important source of funds to bring the project to fruition, along with $2.5 million in Community Preservation/Water Quality Improvement funds the Town Board approved in April, as well as 30-year, no-interest financing from the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation
