The Town of Southampton Department of Land Management’s Building Division will re-open its counter on Wednesdays beginning on October 4, 2023.
Due to the overwhelming influx of building permit applications since the Covid-19 pandemic, the Building Department has limited walk-in counter transactions on Wednesdays in order to allow Staff to focus on all of the reviews, meetings and paperwork required for the issuance of permits and certificates of occupancy. Phone calls, meetings, e mails and other communications have all still occurred.
Chief Building Inspector Sean McDermott has indicated that the Department can once again welcome the public 5 days a week for counter transactions beginning on Wednesday October 4, 2023. Office hours are 8:30 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday.
“The level of applications received have been unprecedented and have caused us to reconsider our process, add staff, and do everything possible to ensure a thorough review so that permits are issued in accordance with all rules and regulations”, said Town Planning & Development Administrator Janice Scherer. “Chief McDermott and I join together to thank the Town Board for their willingness to take whatever steps are necessary to help the staff get out from under our permit backlog. The public’s patience is also greatly appreciated.”
Applications currently under review were made in June. “Chief McDermott and his team are working hard to close that gap as we move forward into the cooler months”, she said.
The public can sign in to make an appointment through the Town’s website at: www.southamptontownny.gov/buildingzoning
