Southampton Town Heat Advisory

A Heat Advisory is currently in effect for our area.

A Heat Advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees Fahrenheit for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit for any length of time. This combination will increase the likelihood of heat related health concerns.

Here are some things to remember when a Heat Advisory is in effect:

  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Stay in an air-conditioned room. If an air-conditioned room is not readily available, visit a public building such as the local library or shopping center.
  • Please note that the Town of Southampton’s Community Centers are also available and open to the public as cooling centers:
    • Crohan (Flanders) Senior Citizen Center: 655 Flanders Road, Flanders (631-702-2375) Open 8am-4pm
    • Hampton Bays Senior Citizen Center: 25 Ponquogue Avenue, Hampton Bays (631-728-1235) Open 8am-4pm
    • Bridgehampton Senior Citizen Center: 585 Sag Harbor Turnpike, Bridgehampton (631-537-3017) Open 8am-4pm
    • Suffolk County cooling center: Suffolk Community College Eastern Campus, Peconic Building, 121 Speonk Riverhead Road, Riverhead. Call ahead at 631-548-2500 to make sure they are open.
  • Stay out of the sun, if possible. Apply sunscreen before heading out and re-apply in the afternoon.
  • Check on relatives and neighbors.
  • Provide shade and fresh water for outdoor animals.

Take these extra precautions if you work or spend time outside:

  • When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
  • Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, which include lightheadedness, nausea, headache, extreme thirst, or if you notice any changes in someone’s mental status.
  • Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible
  • If you must be outdoors, apply sunscreen before heading out and re-apply in afternoon.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments to reduce the risk during outdoor work. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

Heat stroke is an emergency. Call 9 1 1.

After 4:30pm, you may reach The Suffolk County Dept. of Social Services Emergency at its after-hours telephone number: 631-854-91
