NO Plastic Straws, Styrofoam Polystyrene Packing, Peanuts and Coolers
The Southampton Town Board amended Town law by banning the use and distribution of all polystyrene products (Styrofoam), and plastic straws and stirrers by food service establishments, adding these restrictions to the existing Town law banning single use, plastic, retail check out bags. These new restrictions will go into effect on May 8, 2019.
The law restricts the following uses of expanded polystyrene packaging and plastic straws and stirrers in the Town:
- No use by food service establishments except when the food is prepackaged in Styrofoam prior to receipt by the establishment or when it is used to store raw meat or fish;
- No manufacture or sale of polystyrene packing “peanuts” or coolers.
Food service establishments could ONLY provide straws if requested and those straws would have to be made from non-plastic material. In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Food Service Establishments and Beverage Providers may possess up to 20 plastic straws for use only by persons who specifically require them.
Questions regarding the law can be directed to the Town Council Office at (631) 287-5745
