Parents gathered to hear from law enforcement and youth
development experts on how to protect their kids from the dangers of smoking, vaping, alcohol use and opioids at a round table held at the Greek Orthodox
Church in Southampton on Tuesday May 14, 2019. The conference was sponsored by the Southampton Addiction and Recovery
Committee, which was formed to help the community reduce substance abuse andend the Opioid Crisis.
The conference was scheduled before heading into the
summer months and school break, which experts say can be one of the mostdifficult times of the year to monitor kids.
Parents were given tips on how to reinforce the no tolerance stance and whatsigns to look for that indicate their child may be using drugs. Kym Laube, the Executive Director of HUGS and
Southampton Town Police Chief Steven Skyrnecki were among the featuredspeakers.
“We want parents to have reliable information before
the summer when dangerous behaviors by youth often escalate,” said SouthamptonYouth Bureau Director Nancy Lynott, co-chair of the Addiction and Recovery
Committee.
Parents weregiven resource kits to bring back to their schools to share with other
parents.
