Just in time for the Fourth of July holiday weekend, the Southampton Town Police Department and Bay Constables demonstrated how they will use a high tech search and recuse technique to keep the 300 plus miles of ocean and bay coastline safe this summer.
The Town PD demonstrated the use of an unmanned aircraft to release a flotation device to a swimmer in distress, or a victim of a boating or Jet Ski accident until a rescue boat can retrieve the swimmer. “These are new tools we can use to help rescue those in need quickly. The Police Department and Bay Constables are ready to use them if needed in an emergency,” said Supervisor Jay Schneiderman.
The Town’s lifeguards are also ready to assist in a moment’s notice. Assistant Chief Lifeguard Paul Bass said, “The best way to enjoy the summer is to respect the lifeguards, swim only when the flags indicate it is safe to swim and stay within the ropes where the lifeguards can help protect you.”
In addition, new sunscreen dispensers are located at all of the Town’s 19 parks and beaches to help protect from the sun. The Town PD also plans to increase monitoring of the use of illegal fireworks and distracted and impaired drivers during these busy summer months.
