The Southampton Town Board has approved the Cliff Drive Utility Improvement District in the hamlet of Noyac.  The approval paves the way for property owners to tax themselves to cover the costs of undergrounding power lines.

The vote was permitted after it was approved by the State Comptroller, the first such approval for an Underground Utility Improvement District in the state.  It allows homeowners to pay for the costs to underground the wires and eliminate 9 PSE&G poles, between poles 19 and 29 on Long Beach Road.

The Cliff Drive Underground Utility Improvement District includes 18 properties and is delineated on the north by Harbor Drive, on the east by Cliff Drive, on the south by the southern boundary line of 53 Cliff Drive and on the west by Long Beach Road.

The proposed improvements, including construction costs are estimated to total $420,000.00 and shall be financed through 20 year bonds.  The new district still needs final bond approval by a super-majority of the Town Board; 4 members.

The vote on the bond proposal will be held at a later date following a thirty day period to allow the Suffolk County Clerk’s Office to receive any objections.   If the bond proposal is approved, each property will pay approximately $1,421.19 the first year of the bond.
