Beginning on Monday, October 12, crews will be working underneath the west side of the Shinnecock Canal Bridge for the Sunrise Highway, drilling “micropiles” or small pilings into the soil to allow for the construction of elevated electric conduits to carry the new, second 138kV electric transmission line over the canal.
During a previous project in 2000, three conduits were attached to the underside of the bridge, and have remained empty and unused until this project. The new riser structures which will be built on both the west and east sides will connect these conduits to new conduits we are placing in the ground.
On Monday, October 12, and for approximately one week until Friday, October 16, portions of Canal Road West, the access to the canal area, will be closed to traffic with a detour in place.
On Monday, October 19, crews will begin work on the east side of the bridge. During this work, Canal Road will be closed to traffic from Monday, October 19 at 7 a.m. until Friday, October 23 at 7 p.m. Detours will be put in place, and include diverting Canal Road traffic onto Route 39 to Old North Highway, and back to Canal Road. A detail photo is attached of the detour.
We will be notifying residents in the area beginning today (Tuesday, October 6) of the work and detour to allow them to prepare. Also, we have alerted emergency services of the detour via our two-week look ahead email sent Monday, October 5, which will be repeated on Monday, October 12 and Monday, October 19.
Finally, we have obtained the necessary permits from the New York State Department of Public Service via the Art. VII and EM&CP approvals for the detours, as well as a permit from Suffolk County for Canal Road specifically.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
