Youth Advisory Committee

The Town of Southampton Youth Bureau is recruiting new members for their Youth Advisory Committee for the 2020 – 2021 school year! If you are in grades 7th through 12th and interested in planning trips and events, doing community service projects, and making friends with students from other schools, then sign up for YAC! As a YAC member, you can make a difference in your community.  Community service projects may include leaf raking for senior citizens, hosting a clothing drive, participating in fundraisers for other youth organizations, meeting with elected officials for youth causes, or other activities that can make a difference in our community.  Youth Advisory Committee is a great way to get involved and to earn community service credit hours during the school year. A hybrid of in person and remote meetings will be held every other Tuesday from 6:30pm – 8:00pm. The first in person meeting begins September 22nd 2020 at the Hampton Bays Community Center, 25 Ponquogue Avenue. Pre-registration is required! Transportation is available upon request. For more information, call (631) 702-2425.

Youth Court

Southampton Town’s Youth Court is a great way to earn community service credits and build your college resume.  High school students from local schools work together to hold real trials for juvenile offenders, where all the facts of the case are heard and the jury decides on a disposition, or “sentence”, for the offender to repair the harm that they have caused to the victims.  Cases range from trespassing, driving without a license, underage drinking to harassment, possession, and theft - among others.

Any teen in grades 9 - 12 living in the Town of Southampton can participate.  Students who are interested in becoming an attorney, improving public speaking skills, learning about the justice system, building their college/job resume or just enjoy community service are invited to join.

General youth court meetings are held in a hybrid format every other Monday via Zoom and in person.  A new member training will be held on Saturday, October 17th from 9:00am – 3:00pm at the Flanders Youth Center, 655 Flanders Road. For more information, please visit www.southamptontownny.gov/youthbureau or email Karen Matz at kmatz@southamptontownny.gov.
