On Friday, December 13, 2024, the Southampton Town Affirmative Action Task Force and Human Resources Department hosted a Civil Service Information Session at Southampton Town Hall for high school counselors from the Township, as well as Riverhead, Eastport-South Manor, and Center Moriches, to discuss career opportunities in public service for our local youth.
Representatives from the Suffolk County Civil Service Department attended the session and did a phenomenal job explaining the intricacies of Civil Service. Peter Strecker from the Southampton Town Youth Bureau was also present to discuss work and internship opportunities for students, including those still in high school. The plan going forward is to maintain a relationship between the Town and the local school districts in order to assist them in understanding and sharing information about Civil Service opportunities.
Minerva Perez stated, “As the Southampton Town Affirmative Action Task Force Chairperson for 12+ years, I’m encouraged by the tremendous strides the Town is taking in addressing real gaps in diversity. The education, the internal training, the creative solutions that we have presented have been embraced by the Town in a groundbreaking way. The effort is worth it as long as we keep seeing more of our town reflected in the staff of Town government.”
“I am delighted to have hosted high school counselors from our Township and the area. It is important to Town government that our local youth know about the opportunities of public service. Whether they are planning to pursue higher education or enter the workforce directly after high school, a career in local government can offer them a meaningful way to make a lasting impact in their community,” said Juan Becerra, Director of Human Resources. “Finally, I would like to thank Eliza Jo Morgan, the Town’s Affirmative Action Officer, for her hard work in coordinating and putting this event together.”
Councilmember Michael Iasilli, who is liaison to the Task Force, said, “This event is a product of wonderful collaboration between the Town’s Human Resources Department and Affirmative Action Task Force. Each and every day, we are working to enhance diversity and inclusion in the Town, and this seminar represents how we fill the gaps.”
