[ARCHIVED] Councilmember Michael Iasilli Sponsors Legislation Making Noyac Road Safer and Other Improvements

At the May 8th Work Session, Councilmember Michael Iasilli sponsored legislation (49814) making Noyac Road consistently 30 MPH. In some places, Noyac Road is posted at 35 MPH, making the speed limit inconsistent throughout the corridor. In an attempt to address constituent concerns of speeding, the Highway Department has launched a number of efforts to deal with the issue. In close partnership with Councilmember Iasilli, the Highway Department has ensured that all of Noyac will be consistently 30 MPH.

Earlier this month, the Town completed the first phase of the Noyac Road Repaving Project, thanks to funds available in the budget. At the same time, Councilmember Iasilli, through guidance set by the Town’s Traffic Mitigation and Safety Taskforce, also launched a number of other initiatives to make Noyac Road safer for commuters and residents. In partnership with Suffolk County Legislator Ann Welker, the Noyac Civic Council, and the Town Highway Department, plans for enhancing the Long Beach Road x Noyac Road intersection with a westbound stop sign was discussed and will be trialed. Likewise, the Highway Department will be actively making the intersection at Noyac and Stony Hill more adequately navigable.

Speed monitoring efforts have been continuing, and the Town is coupling monitoring through speed display units with ramped up police enforcement on the road at different times of the day. Data collected by the monitors helps to identify prime times when speed is highest., helping the Police Department with enforcement. The Highway Department also installed new flashing traffic signs at the Christian Fellowship crosswalk, and another at Cromer’s Market as a traffic calming measure. Other types of signs such as intersection warning signs and turnover warning signs around sharp bends and hidden side streets have been installed to warn trucks and cars of the need to lower speed at particular areas of concern.

Councilmember Iasilli has also been working closely with Town Police Chief James Kiernan on Public Service Announcement videos encouraging traffic safety that will be going out on Sun TV and Sea TV this month, as well as being featured on the Town’s social media channels and website.

“All of these efforts have been made as a response to constituent outreach and broad efforts to enhance traffic safety. And it is not only in Noyac that we are doing this. We have enacted efforts like this in other hamlets like Hampton Bays, Remsenburg, and Bridgehampton. We will continue to do so,” the Councilmember stated.

Town Highway Superintendent Charlie McArdle stated, “With the new stop signs and traffic calming efforts through speed monitoring on Noyac, we have placed public safety as a top priority. Our number one goal is to enhance the quality of life for the community. Our crews were out there every day making sure we got repaving done and the new intersection patterns will bring a safer situation on the road for everyone.”

“Southampton Town Police Department is committed to protecting our community and providing safe travel throughout the town. To help accomplish this, an initiative began in January to step up enforcement of vehicle and traffic violations. Speeding, DWI, distracting driving, are all important for us to control for. The efforts implemented on Noyac Road and in other places are within the goals of keeping Southampton safe,” added Southampton Town Police Chief, James Kiernan.

Councilman Bill Pell, who is co-sponsoring the resolution mentioned, “I support this effort along with everything the Highway Department and Police Department have been doing to improve the quality of life of our area.”

The Town Board will hold the public hearing on June 10th at 1 PM.

There is a prospective Pedestrian Enhancement project expected to begin next year as per grant money secured by then-Councilmember Tommy John Schiavoni. This includes enhancements from Trout Pond to Long Beach Road that is aimed for next year to enhance walkability and traffic calming. All of which is pending State approval of grant contracts.
