Town of Southampton, NY April 1, 2024 — The Town of Southampton is expected to experience affects from the solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. Residents are encouraged to be safe if attempting to observe the partial eclipse.
Although the Town of Southampton is not located within the pathway of the total solar eclipse, it is expected that an approximately 90% partial eclipse will be visible in the Town. The partial eclipse should begin around 2:13PM and is expected to end around 4:37PM. The maximum coverage of the sun is expected to occur at approximately 3:27PM.
This unique event presents an opportunity for people to view and learn about this exciting astronomical event that is not expected to be viewable again in New York State until 2079. “We encourage people to take advantage of this unique opportunity, but we also encourage them to do so safely,” said Town Emergency Manager Ryan Murphy.
Some safety tips for people planning to view the partial solar eclipse to consider include:
- Do not look directly at the sun without proper eye protection.
- Regular sunglasses do not provide protection. Only ISO 12312-2 rated eye protection should be utilized.
- Temperatures outside are currently forecast to be in the mid to upper 50’s. Dress appropriately for the weather.
- Use caution when driving due to possible reduced visibility associated with less lighting.
- Expect possible cellular communication systems interruptions due to the possibility of elevated network volume during the time of the eclipse.
