Poxabogue Golf Course Opens for 50th Year
After several months of wintry weather, the opening of Poxabogue Golf Course this week is a sign that spring is finally here. Situated on 39-acres amongst the farm fields of Sagaponack, the Town-owned Poxabogue offers a nine-hole public golf course, pro shop and driving range. Beginning this Wednesday, the course will be open six days a week through May, and seven days a week starting in June. In an area renowned for world class private courses, Poxabogue offers locals and visitors alike, access to a beautiful and affordable venue to play golf on the East End.
“Poxabogue reflects the historic charm of the area and has a very welcoming atmosphere,” said Councilwoman Christine Scalera, liaison to the Town’s Parks & Recreation Department. The course, built in the 1960’s, will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. “It’s a great place to play a round of golf after work or bring your family to hit balls on the range without the air of pomp or formalities,” she continued. “That vibe is what draws everyone from local fishermen, to Wall Street millionaires, to A-list celebrities to play at the course.”
Formerly co-owned by both municipalities, the Town of Southampton purchased the Town of East Hampton’s share of Poxabogue last year through the Community Preservation Fund. Following a bid process, the Town contracted with Steve Lee PGA Golf for the operation and maintenance of the golf facilities. The Fairway Restaurant, also located on the property, is under a separate license agreement and will continue to be run by long time tenant Dan Murray.
Steven Lee was the PGA Pro and General Manager at Calverton Links for 15 years, bringing over 22 years of experience in managing golf facilities. Lee and his staff have already begun making several enhancements at Poxabogue. "Last year we started out late in June but immediately got around 40 new mats, a new supply of balls, and added yardage markers on the range to add to the visual appeal,” he said. “This past September we underwent a massive aeration project on the tees, greens, and fairways, and over the winter we did a renovation of the shrubs by the putting green and tree pruning on the course. We really want to make Poxabogue look pristine,” Lee continued. “We’re starting out the year by cleaning up the bunkers and adding sand as well as putting in an additional grass hitting area. We have more changes coming up.”
In addition to the restaurant, pro shop, course, range, and putting green, Poxabogue also offers private lessons, camps, clinics, and other special events like demo days with major club brands. The first golf clinic will start on Saturday, April 26 for ages 14-adult. Please call Poxabogue Golf Course for more information at (631) 537-0025 or visit the website www.poxgolf.com
